Show Baby Cardigans Find a Good Home

todayAugust 31, 2023

Background

In the Industrial classes at Skelton Show, there were a number of knitting classes within the Handicrafts section, but one in particular had a special focus.

Class 63, a charity class, was entitled “A Premature Baby Item” and sponsored by Harvey and Stanley-Lee.  Exhibitors had to make the cardigans using the pattern provided in the show schedule and then enter them into the show.

After the show the cardigans were donated to the Special Care Baby Unit at Cumberland Infirmary. The special care baby unit is for ill and premature babies and more often than not, they don’t fit into “normal” sized baby clothing, so these donations are definitely handy in a time of need.  Once they have been worn, the baby keeps their cardigan and they go home with the families when they time comes.

Melissa Noble, Marquee Secretary recently delivered the cardigans to the Cumberland Infirmary hospital and the nurses at the special care unit were delighted and extremely grateful for the kind gesture and thoughts from Skelton Show and our industrious knitters.

The charity class changes each year in the Marquee and in 2024 we will be supporting ‘SewPowerful’ by making bags (pattern to be provided).   ‘Sew Powerful’ helps girls get feminine hygiene supplies to them, which enables them to stay in school all month saving them an average of six weeks off school each year.   This pattern will soon be available so craft makers and seamstresses can start preparing their creation in the very near future!
